This reading test has been specifically designed for children, including the very young. Each age has been given a grade, numbered 1 to 7, so that even if a child's reading ability is not equal to the average age, it can still be recorded by the grade number. Within each grade, specimens of printing sizes N5, N6, N8, N10, N12, N14, N18, N24, N36, & N48 have been used.
Bar reading charts, a 6m distance chart of school script letters, a 6m standard chart, reduced Snellen, school script distance types and "selected words" are also included. Two pages of pictures (one shown) are used to obtain and stimulate the interest of young children.
This test is designed to differentiate between children's ability to see and their ability to read. The test is based upon the Ladybird Keywords reading scheme using school script, which is a simplified type written without serifs. It helps the child gradually to appreciate the link between handwriting and print and to make the transition to the Times Roman serif style.
